Diamondhead Ski Touring

Diamondhead was a pretty straightforward ski approach. We decided on doing the trip in 2 days, but could be done in one very long day. Start by driving up hwy 99 and make your way up to the Diamondhead trailhead in Squamish. In winter time, chains are mandatory, otherwise, there's an additional 2-3KM you need to walk to get to the start of the trailhead.

Overall, the trip offers great views of the Howe sound from a unique vantage point and some solid blue runs. If you plan on staying overnight, don't forget about your reservation through BC Park's Discover Camping website.

Our day started at 5am so that we could take advantage of the stable early morning weather. No matter how many times you wake up this early, it's never easy to hear that alarm go off, while everyone else in a hut is sound asleep (or snoring). Small note for those staying at the hut, the bunk beds are less than 6ft long so if you're tall like me, choosing a blanket over a sleeping bag may be a better choice. The hut is also incredibly warm and one can get away with a summer sleeping bag if staying inside.

We hit the summit just before noon and got to drop in after a short lunch break. Skiing off the summit into panoramic views of the Howe Sound, Tanatalus, and Sky Pilot region made for some unforgettable blue sky turns. Not only were the skies blue, but so too were the runs. That allowed us to link each turn with another view of the stunning landscape in front of us. It also makes it a decent beginner/intermediate long day objective.

The crux of the day came when one of our party members broke both of his plate bindings and rendered the walk mode virtually useless. He had to at that point keep the skis in ski mode from the saddle onwards. With +12Km to go before we reached the parking lot, I wouldn't imagine a lot of people wanting to experience such an event.
